Why we'll never ask for your bank password
Bank sync is the industry default. Here's the honest accounting of what it costs you — and why refusing it is a feature.
Every mainstream money app opens with the same request: connect your bank. Hand over your login — or authorize an aggregator to hold the keys — and the transactions flow in forever. It's presented as table stakes. We refused it on purpose, and you deserve the real reasons, not a privacy sticker.
What sync actually costs
Your credentials become a supply chain. With sync, your bank login (or a token to it) lives with a third party, which contracts with a fourth, which gets breached by a fifth. Every party in that chain is a place your financial identity can leak, and none of them is your bank. When we say "no bank logins, ever," it isn't marketing modesty — it's an attack surface we simply don't have. You can't leak what you never held.
Someone pays per account, per month, forever. Aggregators charge the app for every connected account, every month. That cost lands in your subscription — or worse, in the "free" apps, it's recovered by selling your categorized spending as market data. When a money app is free and syncs, you are not the customer; your transaction history is the inventory.
It breaks quietly. Banks change things; connections stall; a "complete" picture silently stops being complete. The dashboard keeps smiling. You stop trusting the numbers precisely when you most need them — and you find out weeks later.
And the biggest cost is behavioral. Sync's whole promise is that you never have to look. But not-looking is the leak. Numbers that update themselves while you sleep ask nothing of you, and what asks nothing changes nothing.
What you do instead
Once a month, you download statements from your bank — the same files your bank already produces, over your own authenticated session — and drop them into your ledger. Four minutes. The parser recognizes each account by its own fingerprint; the second month routes itself.
What that buys, concretely:
- The bank's own record, not an aggregator's reconstruction of it. Statements are the settled truth banks stand behind.
- A monthly appointment with your money. The four minutes of downloading opens the twenty minutes of looking — the ritual this whole app is a bet on.
- A clean trust story. We hold what you gave us: statement files in one ledger file, yours to export or delete. No credentials, no tokens, no quiet third parties.
The honest trade
Sync is genuinely more convenient. If never-lift-a-finger is what you want, we're the wrong app, sincerely. The trade we offer instead: twenty deliberate minutes a month. In exchange: numbers you trust, credentials that never leave your bank, and a staircase that ends in a date with a name.
Convenience got you a dashboard. Attention gets you a date to aim at.
